Health Care Professionals' Experiences With Preloss Care in Pediatrics: Goals, Strategies, Obstacles, and Facilitators

ContextAlthough parents experience grief when confronted with their child's deterioration and imminent death, most bereavement care is focused on supporting after child loss. Insight into intentions strategies of the health professionals (HCPs) in preloss during end life still lacking.ObjectivesTo create a starting point for improvement care, this study explores HCPs' experiences providing support aimed at parental feelings life.MethodsExploratory qualitative research using individual semistructured interviews clinicians pediatrics neonatology hospital homecare settings. Data were thematically analyzed by multidisciplinary team.ResultsNineteen HCPs participated. tried to ensure that could reflect received as concordant preferences not hindered consequence professional actions. Strategies included maximizing presence, enabling involvement decision making, ensuring dignified death. While these strategies, faced several difficulties: uncertainty about illness course, unpredictability responses, being affected themselves It helped develop bond parents, find comfort colleagues, making joint decisions colleagues.ConclusionHCPs strive improve coping yet apply positively influence preparedness well-being well. Individual are left many uncertainties. A more robust approach based theory, evidence, training needed pediatrics.
